CV Anonymisation: Definition, Methods and Limits

CV anonymisation removes or generalises details so a CV cannot reasonably identify the candidate. Learn the methods and how it differs from redaction.

CV anonymisation is the process of removing or generalising details in a CV so that the document can no longer reasonably be used to identify the candidate, going further than simply removing contact details.

The term is often used loosely. Many tools and agencies describe a CV with the name and phone number removed as "anonymised". Strictly, that is CV redaction: useful, but not the same thing. The distinction matters when you make promises to candidates or clients.

Anonymisation versus redaction versus a blind CV

What is removedCan the person still be identified?
RedactionContact details such as email, phone, address and linksOften yes, from name and career history
Blind CVName, contact details and bias-prone details such as age or photoSometimes, from a distinctive career history
AnonymisationEverything that could reasonably identify the person, with specifics generalisedShould not be possible without extra information

A blind CV aims to reduce bias; anonymisation aims to prevent identification.

Common anonymisation methods

  • Remove direct identifiers: name, contact details, photo, date of birth, references.
  • Replace the name with a candidate reference that only the agency can map back.
  • Generalise employers: "a FTSE 100 retailer" instead of the company name.
  • Generalise dates: years instead of months, or durations instead of dates.
  • Remove distinctive details: awards, publications, unusual projects or job titles that only one person could hold.
  • Check metadata: document properties, file names, hyperlinks, headers and footers.

Why true anonymisation is hard

The more useful a CV is to a client, the more identifying it tends to be. A senior candidate's sequence of employers and titles can point to only one person in their market. Generalise too much and the client cannot assess the candidate. In practice most agencies aim for a level of pseudonymisation agreed with the client, rather than full anonymisation, and keep the mapping from reference to candidate secure.

Data protection law also treats pseudonymised data, where the agency can re-identify the person, as personal data. Removing a name does not take a CV outside your obligations. See our GDPR guide for recruitment agencies and blind CV guide.

Practical advice

  1. Agree with the client what "anonymous" means for this process.
  2. Write the policy down and apply it to every CV in the shortlist.
  3. Keep the original CV separate and unchanged.
  4. Read the final document as an outsider would and ask whether you could identify the person.
  5. Describe the result accurately to the candidate.

How CVPitch handles anonymisation

CVPitch removes contact details and can replace the name with your agency reference, from the generated DOCX, PDF and hidden document metadata, using an anonymous prospect preset if you want it applied automatically for a client. The original CV is stored separately and never overwritten. It can also remove date of birth, age, nationality, visa, gender, marital status and religion lines, and mask employers and institutions with descriptors you choose or AI suggests. It does not generalise dates or other career details, and it does not describe its output as anonymised; if your policy requires more, edit those fields before approval and the edits are labelled as recruiter corrections. The free CV anonymiser shows the same idea on plain text in your browser. See features.

  • Blind CV: removing details that could invite bias at shortlisting.
  • CV redaction: removing contact details, the most common first step.
  • Executive search: where anonymity is hardest to achieve.
